fish-tankIn order to lead a long life, fish need to have a proper aquarium environment.  There tends to be a misconception that fish can lead a long and fulfilling life contained in a fishbowl with a little gravel in the bottom; for most fish, this isn’t true.  Fish need their aquarium to have a water pump, aquarium plants, and in some cases, a water heater.  Without a water pump, the water in the fish tank can become bereft of oxygen, and the fish will suffocate.  Aquarium plants can also assist with oxidizing the water, and provide a food source for some kinds of marine fish.  It’s important for certain fish to have a water heater, but most can make do with a lamp above the fish tank.

Caring for saltwater fish can require all the above amenities and much more.  It’s necessary to maintain the right salinity level within the fish tank, and also ensure that the tank doesn’t overflow.  In addition, there are specific heat conditions that are essential for tropical fish.

Dinner Time

It seems like you can’t turn on the news lately without seeing something about contaminated dog food from a foreign country.  Dogs can’t tell us if the food tastes funny, and most will still eat it even if they don’t like it.  It’s important for dogs to have nutritional and safe food to eat, which is the reason many people are now turning to organic dog food.  Most organic dog food is made in the United States, and comes from natural ingredients and contains no preservatives or chemicals.  This dog food is natural and safe for all pets.

You wouldn’t let your dog eat suspicious food, so it’s important to check the source and ingredients of all dog food you purchase.  Check the labels and check where the dog food is made as well, because health standards, especially for pet food, in foreign countries aren’t what they are in the United States and more developed areas of the world.  Your dog will thank you for organic dog food, and lead a healthier life.  You can also find organic dog treats, wet food, and chew toys from many of the same manufacturers of organic dog food.

Cats Need to Scratch!

Cats have a natural instinct to scratch, which serves to mark their territory as well as keep their claws sharpened.  It’s important for cats to have a cat scratching post in the home.  This post provides the cat a place to scratch that is intended for the purpose of scratching.  When cats don’t have a designated place to scratch, it’s quite possible their claws will turn to the furniture or the carpet.  It’s important for cats to learn the place to scratch while they’re kittens, because it’s much harder to break them of a scratching habit once they’ve developed into an adult.

To teach a kitten to scratch their cat scratching post instead of the furniture or the carpet, start with simple practices.  Place the kittens paws on the post and perform a bit of assisted scratching.  If this doesn’t seem to work, try dabbing the scratching post with a bit of catnip.  Keep doing this and eventually you will have the kitten convinced that the cat scratching post is their place to scratch.  If the kitten starts the furniture or carpet, there are sprays that can deter the kittens from scratching there because of an obnoxious smell, but this should be used as a last resort.
